Macky Sall thanks supporters after withdrawing UN bid

Macky Sall thanked Bougar Diouf and the Union of Senegalese Pan-Africanists for supporting his candidacy for UN secretary-general, which he has since withdrawn. In a letter dated 22 October in Marrakech, the former Senegalese president praised their commitment to a stronger African presence in international affairs, reports Seneweb.

Former Senegalese President Macky Sall thanked Bougar Diouf, president of the Union of Senegalese Pan-Africanists (UPS), and members of the organisation for supporting his withdrawn candidacy for the post of United Nations secretary-general. In a letter dated 22 October in Marrakech, he said he was “deeply touched” by their commitment, according to Seneweb.

Macky Sall described the mobilisation as an expression of an ambition for Africa to participate fully in the conduct of international affairs. He also linked his candidacy to the values of peace and dialogue between nations, according to his letter as reported by Seneweb.

The letter came after Macky Sall withdrew his candidacy for UN secretary-general, announced on 17 October. It also followed his denial, published on 22 October, of a possible candidacy to lead the Francophonie.
