Obuasi Senior High Technical School is due to reopen next week for already enrolled students, after its temporary closure on 5 August 2026. The Ghana Education Service is preparing their return and says headmaster Zakaria Abdulai, facing sexual abuse allegations, remains suspended during the investigation, according to its spokesperson Daniel Fenyi cited by 3news.

The Ghana Education Service plans to reopen Obuasi Senior High Technical School next week, after it was temporarily closed to senior students in August 2026. Preparations are sufficiently advanced to allow them to return and classes to resume, said Daniel Fenyi, the service’s public relations officer, in a statement published on Thursday 22 October.

The school was closed on 5 August after violence on campus targeting headmaster Zakaria Abdulai, who was accused by students of sexual misconduct. First-year students nevertheless returned to school on 18 September for the start of the academic year, according to the Ghana Education Service.

Zakaria Abdulai was suspended pending the investigation. Police arrested and questioned him before releasing him on his own recognisance, while the case was referred to the Attorney General. Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak requested that he be transferred to the police’s Criminal Investigations Department in Accra, reports 3news.

The announced reopening follows alerts about sexual violence in Ghanaian senior high schools and criticism of the education system’s response in Obuasi, published on 19 and 21 October.
