ActionAid Ghana is asking the Ministry of Education to guarantee justice and redress for 19 pupils at Obuasi Senior High Technical School who accuse their headmaster of sexual abuse. The organisation is also concerned about a possible pupil-protection problem in other schools, while recalling the presumption of innocence, according to 3news.
ActionAid Ghana has asked the Ministry of Education to intervene to secure justice and redress for 19 pupils at Obuasi Senior High Technical School, in the Ashanti Region, who are alleged to have been sexually abused by the school’s headmaster. The organisation made the request in a petition dated 23 October 2026, while reiterating the presumption of innocence and respect for judicial procedures.
ActionAid is drawing on a review by JoyNews Research, which recorded at least 44 cases of teachers and headteachers accused of sexually abusing pupils since 2015. Twelve of these cases resulted in a conviction, while 23 had no publicly disclosed outcome; no secondary-school headmaster has been convicted, according to the petition.
The organisation says schools must protect pupils from sexual exploitation, harassment and violence. It is also concerned about a possible broader problem in Ghana’s education system and is calling on the authorities to guarantee the protection, dignity and access to justice of the girls concerned.
The petition follows a call made in Ghana on 19 October for better controls on sexual violence in secondary schools and several statements on the allegations concerning the Obuasi school. It notably follows the Youth Bridge Foundation’s call for justice and the announced reopening of Obuasi Technical High School.
