Jesuit superior calls for fairer education in Ghana

Jesuit superior general Arturo Marcelino Sosa Abascal is calling on Ghana’s education system to form pupils committed to justice, peace and human development. He set out this vision during a meeting with pupils and staff at St. Ignatius School in Accra, reports the Ghanaian Times.

The superior general of the Society of Jesus, Father Arturo Marcelino Sosa Abascal, has called for education in Ghana that serves justice and human development. He spoke on Tuesday during a meeting with pupils and staff at St. Ignatius School in Accra, reports the Ghanaian Times.

During the visit, the Jesuit leader encouraged pupils to use their knowledge and values in the service of national development. He advocated an education that prepares young people to contribute to their community, promote peaceful coexistence and enable everyone to live with dignity and hope.

Father Sosa praised the school’s commitment to the four principles of Jesuit education: competence, conscience, compassion and commitment. His visit was part of a four-day official stay in Ghana, aimed in particular at strengthening the Jesuits’ mission and highlighting more than fifty years of presence in the country.

Father Kofi Agyapong, parish priest of St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church, said the visit strengthened ties between Jesuits in different countries and institutions. He recalled that their shared commitment to justice, peace and faith guided their work.
