The UN General Assembly adopted by 130 votes to 30 a Cuban resolution calling for an end to the US embargo on Havana. Support fell sharply from the 165 votes obtained the previous year, while 25 countries abstained, reports the ANG news agency.
The UN General Assembly on Thursday adopted a Cuban resolution calling for an end to the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba. The text received 130 votes in favour, 30 against and 25 abstentions, a majority but the lowest support ever recorded for the initiative, according to the ANG news agency.
The vote marked a sharp decline from 2025, when the resolution received 165 votes in favour, seven against and 12 abstentions. The United States and Israel voted against, along with Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Paraguay and Argentina. Chile, Honduras and Peru, which had supported the text the previous year, abstained this time.
The resolution also called for the lifting of the US blockade on oil deliveries to Cuba, introduced in January. Venezuela did not take part in the vote, as its voting rights in the General Assembly have been suspended because of arrears in its UN contributions. The Cuban president called the adoption of the text a “triumph of truth”.
The vote took place during the 34th consecutive year in which the General Assembly has considered the US embargo against Cuba. Resolutions by this UN body are not legally binding, according to ANG.
