A Russian drone strike on Dnipro’s main railway station killed 14 people on Thursday morning as travellers waited for their train, according to Ukrainian authorities cited by Egypt Independent and P.M. News. The two media outlets differ on the number of wounded: Egypt Independent puts the figure at 10, while P.M. News reports 14. The governor of Dnipropetrovsk region, Oleksandr Hanzha, confirmed that the death toll had risen to 14.
Two trains were at the station when the strike occurred, including one service due to depart for Zaporizhzhia. Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s state railway operator cited by P.M. News, said a jet-powered drone had hit the platform despite a prior alert warning of an increased risk. An 11-year-old boy was among the wounded and several victims were in critical condition, according to P.M. News. The head of the hospital where the wounded were admitted said, according to Egypt Independent, that several were suffering from shrapnel wounds and that four were undergoing emergency surgery.
At least 19 people were killed in different regions of Ukraine on Thursday, according to Egypt Independent. In Chernihiv, two 15-year-old girls died in a strike that also wounded 23 people, according to P.M. News. Three other people were killed in an attack on a residential building in Poltava region, while P.M. News reported 15 wounded in a strike targeting a building in Kremenchuk.
Dnipro mayor Borys Filatov described the attack as a tragedy, according to P.M. News. Volodymyr Zelensky called it “horrible” and called for sanctions against Moscow to remain in place, linking the appeal to recent US decisions on Russian fossil fuel sales and possible discussions on the Russian sovereign wealth fund, Egypt Independent reported. P.M. News said Ukrainian authorities accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians, which Moscow regularly denies. The strikes occurred despite a temporary truce around Olechky, negotiated locally to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and limited to that area.
