The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) intercepted 121 people suspected of preparing to leave through irregular routes on Thursday 29 October in several locations in The Gambia, Bénin Web TV reports. The group comprised 58 Gambians, 37 Senegalese and 18 Guineans, as well as Malian and Ivorian nationals.
Night patrols in Tujereng, Sanyang and Tanji led to the interception of 113 people. Eight others were arrested at the ferry terminal in Barra. Women and minors were among those detained, while a man suspected of being a smuggler was arrested and questioned.
The people intercepted and the suspect were taken to the GID migration management centre, where the Gambian Red Cross provided them with humanitarian assistance. The operations follow an intervention on 21 October during which 90 people, including 44 Senegalese, were intercepted with the support of Spain’s Guardia Civil. They extend a series of operations, including the interception of 222 migrants, 180 of them Senegalese, announced on 28 October.
