A joint operation by the Gambian Immigration Department and Spain’s Guardia Civil led to the interception of 184 people seeking irregular migration on Friday 23 October in the West Coast region of Gambia. Four people suspected of belonging to smuggling networks were also arrested, according to the Gambian Immigration Department, quoted by Seneweb.
Night patrols covered several coastal localities, including the Kartong border post, Sanyang and Batokunku. Those arrested are being held in custody and are taking part in the investigation, Seneweb reports.
The group intercepted comprised 94 Senegalese, 87 Gambians and three Guineans. It included 157 men and 12 women, including 15 minors — eight boys and seven girls. The 184 migrants and four suspects were taken to a detention centre run by the Gambian Immigration Department.
The operation follows several interceptions carried out in Gambia since late September, including 46 suspected migrants intercepted in Batokunku on 29 September and 66 interceptions followed by the arrest of an alleged smuggler on 1 October.
