Maguette Dionne and Aladji Mamdy, members of Silatigui, recount the group’s beginnings and explain the origin of its name, inspired by writer Ibrahima Baba Kaké. They say they existed from 1992-1993 before adopting the name Silatigui and announce their return to the stage, according to Africaguinee.
The group Silatigui, formed by Diaby Mamadi, also known as El Hadj Mamdy, and Maguette Dionne, told Africaguinee.com about the stages of its formation and its career in the early days of Guinean rap. The two artists said they began working together in the early 1990s, before officially adopting the name Silatigui in 1996, following the death of Guinean writer Ibrahima Baba Kaké.
According to Aladji Mamadi, the name Sillah Tiguigui means “the master of the road” or “the master of evolution” and comes from an expression linked to Ibrahima Baba Kaké. The group claims successes including those achieved in 2002 and explains that it devoted its youth to music in the hope of contributing to their families and Guinea.
The two members present their career as a contribution to the early years of Guinean rap, particularly through the “Tribunal Hip-Hop” compilations. They also discuss their desire to pass on their experience to a new generation of artists, according to Africaguinee.com.
