Rising seas have destroyed about 80% of buildings in Ayetoro, Ondo State, displacing thousands of residents and damaging schools, health centres and public infrastructure. Senator Dayo Faduyile has called on the federal government and local authorities to urgently protect the coastline, according to the Daily Post.

The Nigerian Senate has called for an urgent coastal protection programme to safeguard Ayetoro, a coastal community in Ondo State, after the sea destroyed about 80% of its buildings, according to Senator Dayo Faduyile, quoted by the Daily Post. The lawmaker presented the motion on Thursday.

The waves also damaged schools, health centres, places of worship and traditional institutions, and displaced thousands of people, Dayo Faduyile said. He warned that families risked losing access to drinking water and healthcare.

The Senate asked the federal government, the Ministry of the Environment and the Niger Delta Development Commission to work with Ondo State and OSOPADEC, the agency responsible for developing the state’s oil-producing areas. It also called for a transparent review of ongoing coastal protection contracts, including their funding and implementation timetable.

The senators also called on the National Emergency Management Agency to provide immediate humanitarian aid to affected residents. Faduyile stressed that previous protection works had been hampered by implementation difficulties, including delays to Niger Delta Development Commission contracts.
