Real Madrid apologised to China after Kylian Mbappé’s comments about a meme associating his face with Mao Zedong. The Spanish club said it respected Chinese culture and supporters and joined the regrets already expressed by its player, reports Seneweb.

Real Madrid apologised to the Chinese people after comments by its forward Kylian Mbappé about a meme associating him with Mao Zedong, a former Chinese leader, reports Seneweb. The Spanish club also joined the public apology issued by the France team captain on Tuesday.

In its statement, Real Madrid said it respected China, its history, culture and citizens, as well as its millions of Chinese supporters. The club said it wanted to preserve its bonds of friendship with them and reaffirmed its commitment to respect, coexistence and understanding between cultures, according to Seneweb.

The statement came after Kylian Mbappé’s public apology, issued on 27 October 2026, and La Liga’s apology to China on the same day. It also followed the Chinese federation’s demand for an apology from Mbappé and Real Madrid on 27 October 2026.
