North Korea fired around 10 short-range ballistic missiles from Wonsan towards the Sea of Japan, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. The tests prompted Seoul and the Japan Coast Guard to step up vigilance amid heightened military tensions on the peninsula, L’essentiel reports.
North Korea fired around 10 short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan region towards the Sea of Japan, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced on Thursday. The launches were detected at around 12.30pm local time, or 3.30am GMT, according to the JCS.
South Korean forces stepped up surveillance in anticipation of possible further launches, while the Japan Coast Guard urged ships to remain vigilant. The test came less than a week after Seoul proposed holding military talks at the border.
Pyongyang also recently announced the testing of an artificial intelligence-guided precision torpedo and the launch of two strategic cruise missiles from submarines, according to the official KCNA news agency. In early October, the North Korean regime also said it had tested an intermediate-range hypersonic missile capable of changing its trajectory at low altitude using artificial intelligence.
Talks on a possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un resumed ahead of the Apec summit, scheduled for mid-November in Shenzhen, despite analysts’ scepticism. The two Koreas have technically remained at war since the armistice that ended the 1950-1953 conflict.
