El Salvador is deploying more than 2,000 soldiers to Haiti to join the search for four soldiers missing after an ambush near Port-au-Prince. The operation, supported by several countries and international organisations, is focused on the Plaine-du-Cul-de-Sac, according to El Salvador’s foreign ministry quoted by AFP.
El Salvador has deployed more than 2,000 soldiers to Haiti to take part in an operation to find four Salvadoran soldiers who went missing after an ambush, the Salvadoran foreign ministry announced on Wednesday. The soldiers are joining forces already in the country as part of the UN-backed Gang Suppression Force (GSF).
The four soldiers disappeared on 18 October when attackers targeted their armoured vehicle as they were returning from a market near Port-au-Prince. The search is focused on the Plaine-du-Cul-de-Sac area, north-east of the capital, according to the Salvadoran foreign ministry.
Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele spoke on Wednesday with Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé about the operation. Mr Bukele threatened last week to eliminate Haitian gangs if they did not release the Salvadoran soldiers, according to AFP.
