Nigeria qualified for the quarter-finals of the Under-17 Women’s World Cup by beating Mexico 2-1 on Thursday at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Morocco. The Nigerians scored once in each half through Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dustan, while Emily Delgado pulled one back in added time, the Daily Trust reports.
The Flamingos have reached the quarter-finals for the fifth time in their history, and for the first time since 2024. They will face Venezuela on 1 November for a place in the semi-finals, according to the Daily Trust.
Nigeria opened the scoring in the 40th minute after a mistake by the Mexican defence, with Umejiaku collecting a poorly cleared pass before finishing. Dustan doubled the lead with 10 minutes remaining, after Mexican goalkeeper Ania Lopez failed to come out to claim a cross. Despite Delgado’s goal in the final minute of added time, Nigeria held on to its lead and remains unbeaten against Mexico in the competition, the Daily Trust reports.
The qualification comes a day after the list of six teams through to the quarter-finals was published. It also follows Morocco’s 6-0 elimination by North Korea, announced on 28 October.
