Nearly 600 students from the 2023 cohort in Language Sciences at Joseph Ki-Zerbo University (UJKZ) in Ouagadougou have completed their degree after three years of training. Named the “Resilience Cohort”, the group numbered nearly 700 students when they entered the university, according to Burkina 24.
The graduation ceremony featured a conference, a cake-cutting ceremony and a visit to the Thomas Sankara Memorial. The cohort’s sponsor, Prof. Awa Tiendrébéogo, a Language Sciences professor and permanent secretary responsible for the promotion of national languages, wants to mobilise the graduates to revitalise the languages of Burkina Faso. She considers their scientific skills a resource for supporting public policies promoting the national linguistic heritage.
The deputy director of the UFR of Letters, Arts and Communication at UJKZ, Dr Tirogo Issoufou Kaboré, also highlighted the efforts made by the students during their studies. The cohort, which obtained its baccalaureate in 2023, notably went through the process of normalising academic years.
The training takes place in a context of promoting the teaching of national languages in Burkina Faso, with the project to make their teaching universal in schools.
