Nearly 100 female police officers received free breast cancer screening in the Bono East Region of Ghana. The operation was organised at the Techiman police station by the Ellen White Sustainable Foundation, the Awat Foundation and the Police Ladies Association, according to MyJoyOnline.
The initiative targeted female police officers who have little time to visit a healthcare facility because of their work schedules, explained Ellen White Opoku, founder of the Ellen White Sustainable Foundation. The Police Service will cover the care of officers found to have the disease, said ASP Beatrice Okrah, head of criminal affairs at the Jema District Police Station and a member of the regional leadership of the Police Ladies Association.
An awareness session also helped participants learn more about breast cancer and pass the information on to their colleagues and families, according to Beatrice Okrah. The programme was held under the theme ‘Investing in women’s health, investing in stronger communities’.
The initiative is part of efforts to improve access to healthcare for women working in the security services, according to the organisers.
