Mutharika promises end to Malawi power cuts by December

Malawian President Peter Mutharika blames fuel shortages on logistical problems and promises an end to power cuts by December. He says some disruptions are caused by unidentified actors, who will be held accountable, according to a government-broadcast interview reported by Nyasa Times.

Malawian President Peter Mutharika has promised that power cuts will end by December, after repairs to machines currently under way. He made the announcement on Saturday in an interview recorded at State House and broadcast by the government.

Mutharika attributed fuel shortages to logistical difficulties rather than a lack of supply. He said fuel was available at the Tanzanian ports of Nacala, Beira, Tanga and Dar es Salaam, but still had to be transported to Malawi. He also said some causes of the power cuts were “man-made” and assured that those responsible would be punished, without naming them.

The president spoke after Malawi’s opposition accused the government of worsening the shortages on 22 October. He had returned to Malawi the day before the interview after a trip to South Africa.
