Real Madrid manager José Mourinho praised Kylian Mbappé and the club for their response to the player’s comments about China, as well as their apologies to the Chinese public. At a press conference before Real Madrid’s trip to Santander, he said the matter had been handled responsibly, according to Punch.

José Mourinho, Real Madrid manager, praised Kylian Mbappé and the club for their response to the controversy over the French forward’s comments about China. He said both had reacted quickly and responsibly at a press conference on Saturday, Punch reported.

The controversy concerns comments by Mbappé about an internet meme depicting him with the face of Mao Zedong, China’s former leader. The player, Real Madrid and La Liga apologised after the comments drew criticism in China. Mourinho said the club had done its part by apologising to the Chinese people.

The Portuguese coach also defended Mbappé’s character, describing him as intelligent and mature. He praised his attitude after the forward finished behind Bayern Munich player Harry Kane in the Ballon d’Or vote.

Mourinho’s comments came after Real Madrid apologised to China on 29 October. The controversy also prompted an apology from Mbappé, published on the same day.
