The International Weightlifting Federation awarded Moscow the hosting of the 2030 World Championships, a first for an Olympic federation since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. The decision follows the announced return of Russian weightlifters to competitions, Leadership reports.
Moscow will host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced on Sunday. This award makes the IWF the first Olympic federation to entrust a global competition to Russia since the invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, Leadership reports.
The decision comes four months after the IWF announced that Russian athletes could again take part in its competitions. In July, the International Olympic Committee provisionally lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, without deciding whether Russia could use its flag, colours and anthem at the Olympic Games.
The IWF also awarded the 2029 Senior World Championships to Ahmedabad, India. Aleksandr Vinokurov, president of the Russian Weightlifting Federation, said the Moscow championships would also serve as a qualification event for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.
No world championship in an Olympic sport has been held in Russia since 2022. The 2025 World Aquatics Championships, initially scheduled for Kazan, were moved to Singapore. Moscow had not hosted the World Weightlifting Championships since 1983.
