Morocco created 66 higher education institutions between 2024 and 2026 and plans to increase its public universities from 12 to 27, Minister Azzeddine El Midaoui said. Seventeen other institutions are awaiting approval, while four provinces are hosting a university institution for the first time, according to the minister.

Morocco created 66 higher education institutions between 2024 and 2026, and 17 other projects are under approval, Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation Minister Azzeddine El Midaoui said on Monday before the House of Representatives.

Of the institutions created, 46 resulted from the division or restructuring of open-access institutions and 20 are new-generation institutions. Taourirt, Taroudant, Tiznit and Taounate are hosting university institutions for the first time.

The project to revise the university map, which is in its final stages, plans to increase the number of public universities from 12 to 27. Each region of the kingdom should have at least one, including Dakhla, Laâyoune, Guelmim and Errachidia. The average number of students per university would fall from about 95,000 to fewer than 40,000.

The first phase would mobilise 200 million dirhams to build and manage university presidencies. The minister said the planning takes into account the characteristics and needs of the kingdom’s 12 regions, with the aim of bringing university provision closer to local communities.
