The National Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT) denounces the seizure of its office and meeting room, the last movable assets at its headquarters. The measure enforces a labour judgment handed down 14 years ago over salary claims owed for the period from 1987 to 2012, reports Businessnews.
Tunisian justice seized the office and meeting room of the National Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT), its last movable assets still at its headquarters, the organisation’s president, Radhia Jerbi, announced on 22 October, according to Businessnews. The measure enforces a labour judgment handed down 14 years ago by the Gafsa Court of First Instance over salary claims covering the period from 1987 to 2012.
In a statement published on Saturday 24 October, the UNFT’s central committee denounced a financial crisis marked by mounting debts, the suspension of grants intended to pay employees and continuing legal proceedings. Its members called for employees’ rights to be settled and refused to bear sole responsibility for financial commitments inherited from previous terms, while stating that they wanted to preserve the organisation’s assets and continue its activities defending women’s rights, fighting violence and supporting women’s economic autonomy, particularly in rural areas, according to Businessnews.
