More than 800 bajajs out of the 3,250 registered by the Mahajanga municipality are operating without an operating licence and without paying the corresponding taxes. The municipality is preparing to sanction motorcycle-taxi operators who have not renewed their authorisation, said Maeva Portos, director of urban transport in Mahajanga, quoted by L’Express de Madagascar.
The municipality says 2,400 tricycles renewed their licences this year and received new stickers. The deadline for regularisation, set for the end of May, expired several months ago, and the authorities are urging the drivers concerned to comply quickly, according to Maeva Portos.
The municipality had already launched an operation to reorganise the use of public space in the city, particularly in response to traders’ refusal to vacate pavements on 23 October. Mahajanga traders refuse to vacate pavements.
