More than 150 homes belonging to Ethiopian nationals, mainly from the Oromo ethnic group, were destroyed or set alight in Boorama, in the Awdal region of Somaliland, over the past two days. No deaths were reported, but extensive material damage was recorded, according to Caasimada Online, citing Oromo residents.

Awdal police chief Cabdi Khayre Dugsiiye Araweello said that people suspected of being involved had been arrested and that others were being sought. Security forces gathered the Ethiopian residents in a protected location, where they were sheltered, Caasimada Online reports.

Boorama mayor Maxamuud Sheekh Ibraahim apologised to the victims and condemned the violence, which he described as alien to the city’s traditions. He also denied rumours circulating on social media that Oromos were being expelled and called on residents not to spread the information, according to the same outlet.
