Julius Malema, leader of the South African Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has proposed that illegally occupied buildings in Johannesburg be reclaimed and converted into affordable housing and student accommodation. He was speaking at his party’s final rally at Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto, according to SABC News.
Malema accused criminal syndicates of taking over buildings in Hillbrow, Berea, Jeppestown and Marshalltown, then charging vulnerable residents rent. He said the municipal authorities should reclaim these buildings from 5 November and described anyone who takes possession of them as a criminal, regardless of their nationality.
The EFF leader also defended his party’s participation in municipal coalitions, while saying this should not prevent it from holding its partners to account. He cited a criminal complaint filed by the EFF against the mayor and the city manager of Tshwane over what he considered to be an unsafe water supply. Malema also accused elected officials and municipal employees of corruption, manipulating public tenders and delaying projects to protect private interests.
