The Malagasy government has authorised Jirama to directly purchase 18 MW of diesel generator sets and transformers from TWCM Holding Co. Ltd. Another decree provides for the expropriation of Madagascar Utilities transformers for transfer to Toamasina, while 56 sites have already been equipped in six months, according to Energy Minister Radonirina Lucas Rabearimanga.
The Malagasy government has authorised Jirama, the state electricity company, to directly conclude a contract with TWCM Holding Co. Ltd for the purchase of diesel generator sets with a total capacity of 18 MW and electrical transformers, according to L’Express de Madagascar. A decree also provides for the expropriation of transformers belonging to Madagascar Utilities in Ambohimanambola, for their transfer to Jirama’s power station in Toamasina.
The Minister of Energy and Hydrocarbons, Radonirina Lucas Rabearimanga, said that more than 56 sites across the island’s 24 regions had been equipped with generator sets over the past six months. These installations added 97 MW to electricity production over the same period, according to the minister, who has made this solution a priority in response to immediate supply difficulties.
The Antananarivo interconnected grid had a peak capacity of 256 MW, a level comparable to that of a month earlier, according to a source at Jirama cited by L’Express de Madagascar. The government is also preparing solar and hydroelectric power stations, but their construction will take several years.
The decision follows continued investment in hydraulic infrastructure announced on 5 October by Rajaonarison, who claimed at the time that 1,200 facilities had been completed in six months.
