Macron to meet French student organisations on Friday

Emmanuel Macron is due to meet student organisations on Friday, while the Prime Minister meets trade unions on Wednesday to discuss securing demonstrations and responding to students’ demands. The mobilisation is calling, in particular, for absent teachers to be replaced and for more resources, L’Essentiel reports, citing AFP.

French President Emmanuel Macron will receive student organisations on Friday 23 October, as their mobilisation calls in particular for absent teachers to be replaced, more resources and school renovations. The announcement was reported by L’Essentiel, citing Agence France-Presse.

The meeting follows a student mobilisation that began on 18 September at several schools in the Paris suburbs before spreading across the country. The Prime Minister is also due to meet trade unions on Wednesday to discuss securing demonstrations and responses to students’ demands, according to Agence France-Presse.

It comes amid a social crisis marked by violence and looting during the national mobilisation on 17 October. The French government has since limited demonstrations on Saturday 24 October to trade unions and banned gatherings in Marseille and Lyon, according to the decision on demonstrations on 24 October and the bans in Marseille and Lyon.
