Emmanuel Macron has cancelled his planned trip to Abuja and Dakar at the end of October, amid social tensions in France, Jeune Afrique reports. The French president was due to travel to Nigeria and then Senegal on 30 and 31 October.
The trip would have been Emmanuel Macron’s first official visit to Senegal since Bassirou Diomaye Faye was elected president. France has faced a mobilisation of secondary-school pupils since mid-September, denouncing a lack of teachers, overcrowded classes, the dilapidation of some schools and problems linked to Parcoursup, according to La Nouvelle Tribune.
The cancellation comes after measures taken by Emmanuel Macron in response to violence in France, announced on 22 October as part of the restriction of demonstrations. It also follows the condemnation, on 21 October, of foreign comments on violence in France.
