Melania Trump announces a localised ceasefire agreement in Oleshky, Ukraine, between Russia and Ukraine from 29 October 2026. The truce is intended to allow humanitarian aid to be delivered and civilians, particularly elderly people, to be evacuated, according to the office of the US First Lady.
The First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, says she has secured a localised truce between Russia and Ukraine in the city of Oleshky to allow humanitarian aid to be delivered and civilians to be evacuated. The temporary halt to military operations is due to begin on 29 October 2026, according to a statement from her office.
Melania Trump said the remaining residents were mainly elderly people in need of medical care, medicine, food and drinking water. Civilians wishing to leave are to be given coordinated transport to their chosen destination in Russia or Ukraine. Civilian teams from both countries are to assess residents’ needs and organise the operation, including clearing mines from roads.
The First Lady says she worked with the Russian and Ukrainian leaders and relied on a communication channel established during six previous reunifications involving 34 children. An independent American media organisation will accompany the teams on the ground to document the process.
The initiative comes after several American statements on negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, including Donald Trump’s call on 20 October for Ukraine to reach an agreement with Russia. The following day, Vladimir Putin rejected a truce, before saying on 22 October that he favoured a peace agreement over a temporary suspension of fighting.
