Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya is defending the reclassification of the Simbaya land reserves in Wanindara and Kassa Island, saying it aims to secure occupants after decades of uncertainty. He says the 16 October 2026 decree should redress a historic injustice, according to his speech.
Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya justified the reclassification of the land reserves in the industrial zone of Simbaya and on Kassa Island as necessary to redress an injustice against families who have occupied the land for decades. He announced the measure in a speech after ordering it by decree on 16 October 2026, according to Guinee7.
The land is to be restructured, regularised and developed for the benefit of its occupants. After a subdivision project led by the ministry responsible for urban planning, the state plans to build roads, schools, health centres, sports grounds and playgrounds there, the head of state said.
Doumbouya said he had visited Simbaya (Wanindara) on 19 October. He also pledged his commitment to residents of other Guinean localities facing, he said, similar land situations.
The decree reclassifying more than 750 hectares had been reported on 17 October, before the president travelled to Simbaya and gave his speech on land regularisation.
