French President Emmanuel Macron described the shooting in Trappes, which left one dead and five injured, as terrorist and racist. He said the attack was premeditated and motivated by the victims’ skin colour or religion, and called for harmony and unity, according to remarks reported by L’Essentiel.
French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday described the shooting that left one person dead and five injured in Trappes, in the Yvelines department, as a “racist terrorist attack”. Visiting the town, he called for “harmony” and “unity”, according to remarks reported by L’Essentiel.
Emmanuel Macron described it as a “turning point”, saying it was the first terrorist attack planned to kill people because of their skin colour or perceived religion. He urged the French not to give in to either “fear” or “anger”.
The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (Pnat) announced that the suspect had booby-trapped his flat with three gas cylinders, electrical wires and a timer. The home, located in Plaisir according to a police source, was searched after the shooting.
Macron justified his description by citing the alleged premeditation and the suspect’s statements, who allegedly spared some people because of their skin colour and admitted to the act. The anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office is investigating the shooting, announced on 23 October.
