The main student organisations arrived at the Élysée as their mobilisation called for more resources, replacement teachers for absent staff and school renovations. The meeting comes amid a social crisis marked by violence and curfews in France, reports Agence France-Presse, cited by L’Essentiel.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said on Friday 23 October in Limoges that the threat level remained high ahead of demonstrations planned for Saturday in France. He cited risks linked to “the far left” and crime, the Agence France-Presse reported.
The head of government said that security arrangements would be adjusted in light of feedback from the unrest on 17 October. Looting and riots had affected several cities during a national protest over purchasing power.
The social crisis is also unfolding amid student mobilisation. Launched on 18 September, the movement is calling for absent teachers to be replaced, more resources and school renovations. The main student organisations were due to meet the prime minister on Wednesday, according to Swiss media outlet L’Essentiel. The new mobilisation announced for 24 October by the Yellow Vests movement is due to take place the day after Sébastien Lecornu’s statement.
