US Vice-President JD Vance has been holding indirect talks with Iran for two weeks to secure a new ceasefire and revive nuclear negotiations, Axios reported on 6 November 2026. He speaks almost daily with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed ben Abdulrahman Al-Thani and Pakistani Field Marshal Asim Munir, who are acting as mediators, according to Axios.
These exchanges have made it possible to discuss a technical meeting between American and Iranian experts. Vance also wrote to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, 15 days ago to propose direct talks, according to Axios. This initiative follows the June talks in Switzerland, which concluded with Tehran's commitment to invite UN inspectors to its nuclear sites.
US President Donald Trump supports the negotiations while keeping the military option open. “We have to finish the job, through a deal or otherwise,” he told Axios. US officials have reportedly also asked their allies to prepare for possible strikes after the midterm elections.
The discussions come after the nuclear concessions reportedly exchanged between Washington and Tehran, reported on 3 November. On 5 November, Iranian official Ghalibaf had also mocked JD Vance following the Republican defeat in the midterm elections, according to an event already reported by the outlet.
