Gustavo de Carvalho, acting head of the African Governance and Diplomacy Programme at the South African Institute of International Affairs, analysed the implications of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s re-election as president of Brazil. In an interview with Newzroom Afrika on Monday 26 October, he discussed the future of the Brazilian left and drew parallels with South Africa.
The discussion included inequality, political participation and how voters assess their direct experience of government action, according to Newzroom Afrika. Gustavo de Carvalho spoke from his expertise in African governance and diplomacy, while the views expressed in the interview remain those of the people interviewed.
The interview follows the announcement on 26 October that Lula had been re-elected with 51.75% of the vote. Foreign leaders subsequently congratulated Lula on his re-election.
