Morocco’s embassy in Helsinki hosted a meeting on the Moroccan autonomy initiative for the Sahara, attended by Finnish, Moroccan and Norwegian experts. Ambassador Mohamed Achgalou presented Resolution 2797 and the recent UN vote as favourable to the option, according to MAP.

The Moroccan Embassy in Finland and the Association of Finnish Friends of Morocco defended Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara in Helsinki on Monday, during the fifth annual meeting devoted to the proposal, the MAP news agency reported. The meeting brought together Finnish, Moroccan and Norwegian experts to discuss its political, institutional and humanitarian dimensions, as well as the situation of people in the Tindouf camps.

Morocco’s ambassador to Finland, Mohamed Achgalou, presented Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on 31 October 2025, and Friday’s vote as international developments favourable to autonomy. He also said that the end of MINURSO would not undermine Morocco’s commitment to peace, national sovereignty and the security of its citizens.

The meeting is part of a series of events organised around Morocco’s position on the Sahara, after a Senegalese expert presented the end of MINURSO’s mandate as a turning point on 1 November. It also follows the Moroccan government’s linking, on 31 October, of Unity Day to the diplomatic momentum surrounding the Sahara.
