The scheme is intended to strengthen prevention and access to treatment in the worst-affected and least-resourced countries, according to the Global Fund, which met in Geneva from 28 to 30 October.
The Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has approved the creation of the Malaria Impact Accelerator, a mechanism intended to mobilise additional private philanthropic funding against malaria, the institution announced on 3 November.
The mechanism is intended to support country-led programmes to expand access to prevention and life-saving treatments, primarily in countries most affected by the disease and with the fewest economic resources. Global Fund Executive Director Peter Sands said the initiative could shift the fight against one of the deadliest infectious diseases and reduce maternal and child mortality.
The Board requested that implementation uphold, in particular, country ownership, community participation, equity, transparency and rigorous oversight. It met from 28 to 30 October for its 56th session.
Peter Sands also said the Global Fund's investments in health and community systems amounted to nearly $6 billion over the 2024-2026 funding cycle. For the next cycle, covering 2027-2029, 87% of country allocations are expected to have been reviewed by the Technical Review Panel by the end of 2026.
