The Ghanaian government will cover Doris Adu Gyamfi’s travel to New York so that she can say goodbye to her 15-year-old son, Javits Frimpong, who was shot dead in the Bronx. Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that the authorities were also helping her with her visa application and could contribute to funeral costs, according to the Zambian Observer.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani had said that US President Donald Trump had agreed to grant the mother a visa quickly after a telephone conversation. Mamdani said no parent should have to experience the loss of a child thousands of miles away. The agreement had not been separately confirmed by the White House at the time of the Associated Press’s initial report.
Javits Frimpong was killed on 29 October while travelling to school. He had left Ghana about a year earlier to join his father in New York and dreamed of becoming a doctor. His father mentioned bullying at school, but police have not established a link between it and the murder.
Ghana had previously called for justice after the teenager’s death in the Bronx. The travel assistance announced by the minister is an additional measure to enable his mother to travel to New York.
