FRN-FARDC clashes spread to five territories in South Kivu

By , based on Actualité.cd

Clashes between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation are continuing in five territories of South Kivu, notably Walungu, Mwenga and Fizi. Fighting has also opened a new front in Kabare despite the ceasefire planned under the Doha peace process, according to Actualite.cd.

Clashes between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) and the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN) are continuing notably in Nzibira, Lutunkulu and Nyalubimbe, in Walungu territory, South Kivu. Local sources cited by Actualité.cd say the army and its allies have launched an offensive, disrupting the Kankinda market in particular.

In Mwenga territory, fighting has been reported in Cidasa and Kalambi, two villages controlled by the FRN. In Fizi, clashes have spread to at least six villages around Minembwe, including Kakenge, Rugomero, Nyarurango, Nyaruhinga and Nyamabuguma. Bombardments had been reported in Kakenge the previous day and had killed at least two people, according to Actualité.cd.

Another front has opened in Kabare, where FRN elements are fighting fighters known as wazalendo in Kasirusiru and Bugulumiza, near Tshivanga and Mount Biega. The two sides accuse each other of being responsible for the fighting in some areas, while clashes continue despite the ceasefire planned under the Doha peace process, Actualité.cd reports.

The fighting extends clashes reported in Walungu between the FRN and the FARDC, published on 5 November, and follows new clashes reported in North Kivu and South Kivu.
