Brazilian senator Flávio Bolsonaro says he did not flee his country after arriving in Miami and insists he left “for the good of Brazil”. In a letter published after his departure, he says he wanted to protect his family and accuses the Brazilian government of political persecution, reports Nile Post.
The United States granted visas to Flávio Bolsonaro and his family after their Brazilian passports were cancelled as part of a criminal investigation. US President Donald Trump confirmed on Wednesday that Washington had authorised his entry, while declining to comment on his unsubstantiated allegations of electoral fraud. Re-elected Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that those who have nothing to hide have nothing to fear.
The statement came after Flávio Bolsonaro arrived near Miami on 28 October and claimed the title of “true president” of Brazil. These episodes followed Flávio Bolsonaro’s challenge to the election on 26 October.
