A fire destroyed more than eight houses in the Héroe Luba neighbourhood of Malabo, leaving more than ten families without homes or belongings. Residents blamed a short circuit and criticised the slow response of the emergency services, reports Real Equatorial Guinea.
A fire destroyed eight houses in the Héroe Luba neighbourhood of Malabo on Sunday 1 November, leaving more than ten families homeless and without their belongings. The victims said a short circuit caused the fire, according to Equatorial Guinean media outlet Real Ecuatorial Guinea.
As most of the homes were built with semi-permanent materials, the flames spread quickly. Residents helped put out the fire and rescued an elderly man with reduced mobility, said Lázaro González, one of those affected, cited by Real Ecuatorial Guinea.
The victims are seeking help from the public and the authorities. They say the late arrival of the emergency services contributed to the fire spreading. Several of those affected say they are unemployed and do not know how to rebuild their lives, according to Real Ecuatorial Guinea.
The fire follows another fatal blaze in Malabo, which killed six members of the same family on 22 October, according to the earlier fire death toll.
