Egypt plans 39 new cities by 2052, with 27 already under way

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly presented at Egypt Forum 2026 government priorities for improving public services, employment and living standards, as well as a development plan for 39 new cities by 2052. He said 27 were completed or under construction and that 14 to 15 million people already lived in them, according to MENA.

Egypt plans to build or develop 39 new cities by 2052, 27 of which have already been completed or are under construction. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly presented the figures at Egypt Forum 2026, held from 19 to 24 October under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the MENA news agency reports, as cited by Egypt Independent.

Between 14 million and 15 million people currently live in these new cities, which are designed to ease pressure on overcrowded urban areas and create jobs. The government says it has built more than two million homes since 2014 and redeveloped neighbourhoods considered dangerous, which previously housed more than 350,000 families.

The first phase of the “Decent Life” rural development initiative covers 1,477 villages, with investments of more than 450 billion Egyptian pounds. The government is also preparing rental, social and middle-class housing programmes, with delivery planned over the next four years. At the same time, about 4.7 million families benefit from the Takaful and Karama social protection programme, which has helped nearly 8.2 million families since its launch.
