The governor of Nigeria’s Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, threatens to sign the execution warrants of four men sentenced to death if they do not appeal within 30 days. The four men were sentenced on 29 September by a special criminal court for the kidnapping of a woman in Benin City, according to the governor.
The threat follows the death sentences handed to four men in the Vegetable Market kidnapping case on 29 September. It also comes amid a national debate on executions, with Nigeria having 4,329 people on death row after ten years without an execution, according to figures published on 15 October.
