Nurses at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, in Abeokuta, are demanding medical equipment, adequate staffing, water and electricity after having to share one blood-pressure monitor between three wards. Their association has given management 21 days to respond to these demands, according to Punch.
Nurses at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, have given their management 21 days to address shortages of medical equipment, inadequate staffing and poor working conditions, according to Punch. They issued the ultimatum during a protest organised by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives at the facility.
The healthcare workers said three wards had to share a single blood-pressure monitor and called in particular for oximeters, cardiac monitors, thermometers, scales, glucometers and oxygen cylinders. They are also demanding medicines, emergency equipment, a reliable electricity and water supply, and the recruitment of specialist nurses for emergency care, intensive care, psychiatry, surgery and maternity services.
The association is also calling for an end to shifts staffed by only one qualified worker, regular staff training and the reactivation of DStv subscriptions in the wards. It says the absence of television programmes for more than eight months has deprived psychiatric patients of an activity that could reduce their boredom, Punch reports.
