Djibouti’s National Office for Water and Sanitation (ONEAD) and the Agency for Urban Rehabilitation and Social Housing (ARULoS) signed an agreement on Thursday to clear rainwater drains in neighbourhoods 3, 4, 5 and 6 of Djibouti City. The work is intended to restore runoff drainage capacity, limit water stagnation and reduce flood risks, according to the Djiboutian News Agency (ADI).
The agreement was signed by Mohamed Fouad Abdo, director general of ONEAD, and Abdourahman Ali Ahmed, director general of ARULoS, under the chairmanship of the ministers for the City, Amina Abdi Aden, and for Agriculture, Water, Fisheries and Livestock, Radwan Abdillahi Bahdon. The two ministries plan to pool the resources and expertise of their operational structures to carry out the work, according to ADI.
The agreement extends drain-clearing operations launched in Djibouti, following ONEAD’s preventive clearing of drainage pipes on 30 September. It also follows the preventive operation against El Niño floods launched on 27 September.
