The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games brought 2,700 athletes to Diamniadio, Dakar and Saly, offering a pause in Senegal’s political tensions. However, the 2026 supplementary finance bill was rejected in committee by the Pastef majority, reports Fratmat.info.
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games offered a pause in Senegal’s political tensions on Saturday 31 October, with the opening ceremony presided over by Bassirou Diomaye Faye at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, according to Fraternité Matin. Over 15 days, 2,700 athletes from around the world are due to take part in competitions in Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.
The event comes as the 2026 supplementary finance bill was rejected in committee by Pastef, the party of Ousmane Sonko, which holds a majority with 130 of the 165 seats in the National Assembly. Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lô called on the executive and legislature to engage in dialogue, while warning on 26 October that the president could use constitutional tools to prevent a budget shutdown.
The opening of the Youth Olympic Games follows Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s call on 26 October for Senegal to successfully host the competition. It took place on the same day as the presentation of the show involving 1,115 participants, including 628 dancers, with performances by Baaba Maal and Daara J Family, according to Fraternité Matin. The ceremony follows the opening of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
