Counting began in Morocco after polls closed in the legislative election to renew the 395 seats in the House of Representatives. Twenty-eight parties, a coalition formed for the election and two lists of independent candidates were competing, according to a statement from Morocco’s Interior Ministry. Turnout stood at 28.05% at 5 pm, up from 21% at 3 pm.
Around 7,288 candidates were seeking the votes of some 16 million voters. The campaign focused in particular on purchasing power and unemployment, two major social and economic issues.
The result is expected to help determine the make-up of the next government. Morocco’s king appoints the head of government from the party that wins the most parliamentary seats.
