FC Barcelona have been fined 602 euros for approaching Argentine striker Julián Álvarez without first notifying Atlético Madrid in writing. The Spanish Football Federation imposed the sanction after a complaint by the Madrid club, MyJoyOnline reports.
Atlético Madrid also referred the matter to FIFA, but world football’s governing body said it was not competent to examine the case. Julián Álvarez, 26, has remained in Madrid and his contract runs until June 2030.
The striker later apologised to Atlético supporters, who had regularly booed him this season. He acknowledged that a summer interview in which he said he wanted to fulfil his dream of playing for Barça had been a mistake, according to MyJoyOnline.
Álvarez joined Atlético from Manchester City in August 2024 in a transfer worth up to £81.5 million. He has scored 51 goals in 115 matches for the Spanish club, after netting 36 goals in 103 appearances for Manchester City, according to MyJoyOnline.
