The Criminal Chamber of the National Economic and Financial Centre on Monday 26 October sentenced former mayor of Bamako district Adama Sangaré to ten years’ imprisonment for offences against public property and forgery in the illegal allocation of plots on the site of Bamako-Sénou International Airport, according to Mali Actu. Former mayor of Commune VI Souleymane Dagnon, tried in absentia, was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment and an international arrest warrant was issued for him.
Former sub-prefects Daha Keïta and Ibrahim Koïta were also sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment. Adam Aïché Traoré, Fatouma Samassékou and Bourama Komagara were sentenced to ten years, five of them suspended, while Sékou Keïta was acquitted, according to Mali Actu.
The convicted defendants must jointly pay the Malian state 483.96 million CFA francs for the costs of demolishing the illegal constructions and 50 million CFA francs in damages. The trial concerned the fraudulent regularisation of plots between 2016 and 2018, in an area classified as public property of the state since September 1999.
The verdict came after proceedings opened on 12 October, following Adama Sangaré’s appearance in the airport plots case and the prosecution’s submissions announced on 20 October in the Adama Sangaré trial.
