Youth-led demonstrations inspired by the French movement spread to Portugal, Italy and Germany on Saturday, according to France 24. In Germany, large rallies were organised by the initiative “Gen Z has got this”.
The demonstrators called for improvements to education and healthcare, stronger climate protection and a more affordable cost of living. They also opposed the reintroduction of compulsory military service.
However, gatherings turned violent in several major German cities towards the end of the day, including in Frankfurt, the country’s financial capital. The violence preceded the riots that left people injured and shops looted in Germany, reported on 1 November.
