The 8th Congress of UEMOA Chartered Accountants adopted a roadmap at the end of its proceedings, held on 21 and 22 October 2026 in Cotonou, according to Matin Libre. More than 350 participants from over 18 countries took part in the meeting, which focused on transparency and financial sovereignty in the West African Economic and Monetary Union.
The recommendations call in particular on member states and community institutions to consult the Permanent Council of the Accounting Profession before adopting financial or tax legislation. They also advocate for the accounts of public institutions to be certified by registered chartered accountants, according to statements by the scientific committee president reported by Matin Libre.
For professional bodies and firms, the committee recommends 40 hours of compulsory continuing training on ethics, the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing, environmental, social and governance criteria, and artificial intelligence. It also advocates a practical anti-fraud toolkit and quality reviews between firms in line with international standards ISQM 1 and ISQM 2.
The congress coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Order of Chartered Accountants and Certified Accountants of Benin. The scientific committee president said implementation of the roadmap would be monitored using specific indicators.
