Tanzanian Energy Minister Juma Homera orders work to speed up on the 220-kilovolt power line project between Songea, Tunduru and Masasi. The infrastructure, comprising 214 kilometres on the first section and 177 kilometres on the second, is intended to strengthen the grid and access to electricity in the south, according to JamhuriMedia.
Tanzanian Energy Minister Juma Homera on 25 October urged the company building the 220-kilovolt power line between Songea and Tunduru to speed up work. The project includes 214 kilometres of line and a substation in Tunduru, Jamhurimedia reports.
The second phase involves a 177-kilometre line between Tunduru and Masasi. The two routes are intended to strengthen electricity supply in the regions of Ruvuma, Lindi and Mtwara. TANESCO Deputy Managing Director Amos Kaihula said the entire Songea-to-Masasi connection was 56% complete, while the Tunduru-to-Masasi section had reached 34%.
The works have been awarded to Indian company Kalpataru Projects International Limited. The Songea-Tunduru section costs 150.78 billion Tanzanian shillings and the Tunduru-Masasi section 157.69 billion. Juma Homera asked TANESCO, the state electricity company, to supervise the contractor so that the project is completed on time.
